KV Kortrijk vs. KAA Gent

Preview

The last game of the first round could be the most interesting, since two quality teams play against each other, whereby their mutual duels have been unpredictable in the past.

Kortrijke ended last season in middle of the standings because of very poor performance away from home, where they achieved only two victories in 15 matches, being the second most inefficient guest in the league, with only 12 scored goals. On the other hand, they suffered only two defeats at home, having the second best defence. They have brought a few experienced players during this summer transfer window, the most significant of which are centre back Tomislav Barbaric from FK Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), left wing Idir Ouali from SC Paderborn (Germany), right-back Roamin Metanire from FC Metz (France) and left-back Joaozinho from Braga (Portugal). Kortrijk played out seven warming matches without a single defeat, whereby they achieved five victories and two games were draws. Defensive midfielder Gertjan De Mets is sidelined due to long-term injury.

Probable line-up of KV Kortrijk (4-2-1-3): Sifakis – Marusic, Chanot, Gigot, Tomasevic – Roland, Verstraete – De Smet –  Kage, Papazoglu, D’Haene

Gente was the runner-up in the regular part of the season, with four points less than the first-placed Club Brugge KV. Defending the title they missed to keep the leading position by playing out two draws in the last two rounds, one of which was against relegating team of Leuven at home. They also failed to keep the second place in the Championship Group, ending the season in the third place, that is why they have participated in the Europa League qualification from the third round. Gent achieved a very comfortable victory in the first leg, a 5-0 against FC Viitorul at home, which is why they can be relaxed on the eve of the rematch and be focused to the first game in the Jupiler League. Before the game against FC Viitorul they played out eight warming matches, achieving only three victories, next to three draws and two defeats.
